Ika Tokkuri, edible squid sake bottles, are making a comeback in Japan among eco-friendly citizens. The vessels are made of dried, cleaned cuttlefish that have been stuffed with grain or rice during the drying process to achieve their globular shape.
Hot sake poured into Ika Tokkuri bottles absorbs some of the squid's natural flavors, making the alcohol milder in taste. After several uses, the sake bottles essentially become sake-flavored dry squid snacks. In Takahama, Japan, there's even a Committee to Reinstate the Sake Bottle Squid to ensure the Ika Tokkuri bottles become a mainstream sake vessel.
